Advancing Sustainable Management and Resilience of Mediterranean Forests
The StrategyMedFor project will hold its final event from 3 to 5 June 2026 at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, bringing together Mediterranean forest stakeholders, policymakers, researchers, public institutions, and international organisations to discuss the future of sustainable forest management in the region.
Organised by the StrategyMedFor partnership in collaboration with the Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions – Silva Mediterranea, the event will showcase the project’s main outcomes and foster dialogue on the adoption, transferability, and long-term impact of its tools and methodologies.
A Mediterranean framework for resilient forests
Over the past two years, StrategyMedFor has worked to develop a region-specific vision for the sustainable management and resilience of Mediterranean forests, adapted to future climate scenarios and supporting restoration and conservation efforts across the region.
The project has developed innovative methodologies and operational tools to:
- assess forest conditions,
- identify priority areas for restoration and protection,
- support biodiversity conservation,
- strengthen climate resilience,
- and improve decision-making at national and transboundary levels.
The final event will provide an opportunity to present these outcomes and discuss their complementarities with ongoing regional initiatives led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and other Mediterranean actors.
Three days of exchanges, discussions, and field experience
Day 1 – The StrategyMedFor Journey
The event will open on 3 June with a networking and exhibition session presenting the StrategyMedFor journey, including project achievements, pilot site experiences, and collaborative actions developed throughout the Mediterranean region.
Day 2 – Technical and policy discussions
The second day will focus on thematic sessions addressing major challenges and opportunities for Mediterranean forests, including:
- sustainable forest management frameworks,
- wildfire resilience and spatial assessments,
- biodiversity conservation and ecological connectivity,
- climate-informed planning,
- geospatial monitoring tools,
- and policy uptake of project outcomes.
Participants will discover several tools and methodologies developed within the project, including:
- supplementary policy indicators,
- High Ecological Value forest mapping,
- fire risk and impact assessments,
- climate-driven tree species migration analyses,
- and the interactive Mediterranean Knowledge Platform.
The event will also encourage dialogue between researchers, institutions, forest managers, and policymakers on how to strengthen cooperation and scale up sustainable forest management practices across the Mediterranean region.
Day 3 – Field trip to Castel Porziano
On 5 June, participants will take part in a field visit to the Italian Presidential Estate of Castel Porziano near Rome. The visit will showcase examples of sustainable forest management, cultural heritage integration, and practical applications of StrategyMedFor tools in the field.
Bringing together Mediterranean forest stakeholders
The final event will gather:
- project partners and associated partners,
- FAO experts and Silva Mediterranea focal points,
- national and local authorities,
- forestry professionals and protected area managers,
- researchers and international organisations,
- and young forest practitioners interested in biodiversity and sustainability reporting frameworks.
By fostering dialogue between science, policy, and practice, the event aims to contribute to stronger regional cooperation and support the long-term adoption of sustainable forest management approaches across Mediterranean landscapes.
