Objectives of the meeting:
This regional workshop will bring together forest managers, conservation experts, and key stakeholders to strengthen capacities and foster collaboration around Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) in the Mediterranean region.
Focusing on practical tools and applied knowledge exchange, the workshop aims to:
- Introduce and clarify the Criteria and Supplementary Indicators (C&SI) framework, inspired by Forest Europe, as a practical tool to assess forest health, set conservation priorities, and guide sustainable interventions tailored to Mediterranean ecosystems.
- Demonstrate the spatialisation of selected indicators, using spatial proxies and remote sensing to support scalable and harmonised monitoring across the region.
- Present the High Ecological Value (HEV) forest concept, along with its spatial mapping methodology, as a means to identify ecologically significant forest areas and support site-level planning and restoration efforts.
- Build participants’ capacity to apply the Index of Biodiversity Potential (IBP) in the field to assess biodiversity and inform forest management decisions.
- Review and validate the mapping outputs developed for the Galicica pilot site with local stakeholders, ensuring their relevance and usability.
- Advance the development of a Transboundary Action Plan for the Prespa/Ohrid area through collaborative review of the first draft.
- Explore concrete ways stakeholders can support the implementation of the Transboundary Action Plan and contribute to long-term conservation goals.
-
This workshop represents a key milestone in StrategyMedFor’s efforts to co-develop practical, science-based tools and shared strategies for the sustainable future of Mediterranean forests.
