Shaping the Future of Mediterranean Forests: A Recap of Our Successful Side Event at the 8th MFW
The 8th Mediterranean Forest Week (MFW) in Barcelona brought together key stakeholders to discuss the crucial challenges and opportunities facing Mediterranean forests. As part of this vital conversation, the StrategyMedFor project hosted a successful side event titled “Shaping the future of Mediterranean forests.” This event, held on November 7th, 2024, focused on a critical task: adapting Criteria and Indicators (C&I) for sustainable forest management in the region.
The event provided a platform for participants to actively shape the development of a robust and effective C&I framework for Mediterranean forests. This framework will play a vital role in the 10-year strategy for the sustainable management of these ecosystems.
Fostering Collaborative Input to help build the future
The side event featured a stimulating program that included:
- Review of Existing C&I: We presented an overview of existing frameworks from international organizations like FAO, UNECE, and Forest Europe. This provided a solid foundation for understanding the current landscape of forest management assessments.
- Adapting C&I to the Mediterranean Context: We delved into the specific needs of Mediterranean forests, identifying areas where existing C&I require adjustments to accurately reflect the region’s unique challenges and opportunities.
- Data Availability and Collection: Discussions explored reliable data sources and effective methods for collecting the information needed to implement C&I effectively.
- Innovative Approaches: The event showcased innovative tools and techniques for monitoring and assessing forest health and sustainability. This session sparked crucial dialogue about the future of data collection and analysis in the Mediterranean region.
