Kick-Off Meeting: StrategyMedFor Charts a Course for Sustainable Forest Management
The StrategyMedFor project officially kicked off on March 18-19, 2024, in Malaga, Spain. This crucial two-day meeting brought together partners from across Europe and the Mediterranean region, united in their commitment to advancing sustainable forest management practices.
Setting the Stage for Collaboration
The first day commenced with warm welcome remarks from the Dean of Transfer and Digital Transformation of the University of Malaga and a representative from the EUROMED program. This was followed by introductions through a “Tour de Table,” allowing each partner to share their expertise and role in the project.
The partnership then focused on establishing a strong foundation for collaboration. A Steering Committee was formed, along with clear rules for its operation. Partners also agreed upon a project management framework, internal communication protocols, and reporting procedures to ensure smooth information flow throughout the project.
The day continued with a discussion on the proposed communication strategy, led by the project’s Communication Lead. This collaborative effort ensured that the strategy effectively reaches stakeholders and fosters widespread awareness of StrategyMedFor’s goals.
Diving Deep into activities
The second day delved into the specific activities that form the backbone of StrategyMedFor. Each work package lead, along with partners responsible for case studies, presented their key activities. Through open discussions, the partnership addressed necessary changes to the project application and charted a course for collaborative efforts within each work package.
Furthermore, CNPF representatives introduced the Index of Biodiversity Potential (IBP) to all partners. Developed in France by the National Forest Ownership Centre (CNPF) and the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE), this indicator is based on a rapid assess- ment of ten features (or key factors) that influence the capacity of forest stands to support animal, plant and fungal species.
The successful kick-off meeting marked a significant milestone for StrategyMedFor. With a clear roadmap established and a dedicated team on board, the project is well positioned to deliver a sustainable management strategy for Mediterranean forests.
